Growing Peace and Justice

Growing Peace and Justice Community Mural
In the inaugural year of the Alternative Spring Break, NC State students worked with mural artist Joe Brenman and with students of an after-school program at Hancock St. John’s United Methodist Church in Kensington to create an interfaith mural. This mural, funded by NC State University, was created during the students’ week in Philadelphia and then dedicated in June 2006 in memory of Patrick Maurice Spencer, a teenage congregant who was a victim of gun violence.
The art work from this mosaic appears throughout this website, including in the photo gallery, and in the Interfaith Center’s brochure.
“I will always remember working with the children, getting to know them personally and being involved in their lives while doing something permanent for the community.”

Growing Peace and Justice was a joyful collaboration of:
- Joe Brenman, Artist-in-Residence, Arts & Spirituality
- Hancock St. John’s After School Youth
- North Carolina State University Alternative Spring Break Students
- Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia
With special gratitude to the students of North Carolina University and faculty member Roger Callanan for underwriting the cost of the mural and for dedicating their hands and hearts in service to this community, March 5-10, 2006.

Light reflects
Off the water
Like a flash of light
In a dark world
We reflect
On the light
As we strive to create
The brightness
Of a new day
And a better world
